SIBO

What is SIBO?

 

SIBO which stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth is when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.  Most of the bacteria in our digestive tract lives in the colon, and less than 5% lives in the small intestine.   SIBO occurs when there is an increase number of bacteria or an abnormal type of bacteria living there.

 

What causes SIBO?

 

  • Low Stomach Acid

  • Chronic Stress

  • Overuse of acid blockers or PPI’s 

  • Gastrointestinal Infections

  • Food Poisoning

  • Celiac 

  • Multiple courses of Antibiotics

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Crohn’s Disease

  • Diabetes (type l and ll)

Signs I have SIBO?

 

The symptoms of SIBO are similar to many digestive disorders.  Some of the symptoms include;

 

  • Diarrhea

  • Excessive Gas

  • Weight Loss

  • Acid Reflux/Heartburn/GERD

  • Nutrient Malabsorption

  • Bloating

  • Abdominal Pain

  • Discomfort

  • Fatigue and Weakness

 

 

How is SIBO treated?

 

SIBO is usually treated by using antibiotics to attack the bad bacteria. Removing foods that feed the bad bacteria like sugar, alcohol and carbohydrates. Restore the good bacteria that will strengthen the immune system and bring about optimal digestion and nutrient absorption.
