What is SIBO?


SIBO which stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth is when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.  Most of the bacteria in our digestive tract lives in the colon, and less than 5% lives in the small intestine.   SIBO occurs when there is an increase number of bacteria or an abnormal type of bacteria living there.


What causes SIBO?


  • Low Stomach Acid

  • Chronic Stress

  • Overuse of acid blockers or PPI’s 

  • Gastrointestinal Infections

  • Food Poisoning

  • Celiac 

  • Multiple courses of Antibiotics

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Crohn’s Disease

  • Diabetes (type l and ll)

Signs I have SIBO?

How is SIBO treated?
