What is Crohn’s Disease?


Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), that affects the digestive tract.  The most common part of the digestive tract to be affected is the last segment of the Small Intestine (ileum) or the Colon.


What causes Crohn’s Disease?


The cause of Crohn’s is not really known.  It is thought that lifestyle and dietary factors may aggravate but are not the root cause.   It is thought that factors that play a role are genetics and a malfunctioning immune system.


Symptoms of  Crohn’s Disease?


The following symptoms are signs that you may have Crohn’s;


  • Blood in your stool

  • Diarrhea that does not respond to OTC medications

  • Fever that lasts 1-2 days that cannot be explained

  • Weight loss

  • Abdominal pain


How is Crohn’s Disease treated?


Different treatments work depending on the person.  The typical treatment for Crohn’s is the use of steroid medications to reduce inflammation (these mediations can have side effects and are used long term.  It is preferable to follow diet and lifestyle changes to reduce inflammation, strengthen the immune system and supplement for nutritional deficiencies.
